Paul Anka's Music Stars in Choir Therapy Program for Stroke Patients

The president of Hudson Hematology Oncology Associates since 1982, Dr. Devarajan Iyengar is New Jersey-based physician who received his fellowship training from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. During his free time, Dr. Devarajan Iyengar enjoys listening to music, especially by crooners such as Neil Diamond and Paul Anka.

A prolific artist, Paul Anka is a Canadian singer-songwriter whose career spans six decades. In the 1950s, he started scoring hits, and continues to be an active performer.

Paul Anka may not be frequently heard on the airwaves now, but his music has recently been in the spotlight as part of a therapeutic regimen for stroke and other illnesses. In Australia, Graythwaite Rehabilitation Centre recently started a choir-therapy program that featured the songs of Paul Anka and Frank Sinatra. The program aims to improve cognitive and social skills of patients. The staff leads the choir, and the patients sing along, sometimes accompanying themselves with maracas and tambourines.

The feedback has been positive. The institution's speech pathologist, in particular, commended the activity, praising the music's ability to take the patients' minds off the extra rehabilitative work that faces them.
